Tracy Acheng is the firstborn in a family of two children. She lives with both her
parents, who are deeply committed to their children’s well-being despite facing
significant economic hardship. Her father is currently unemployed, while her mother
practices peasant farming on a small piece of land. The family relies on this land to
grow food for their own consumption, with only a small portion of the harvest available
for sale.
The income from these occasional sales is minimal and barely covers the family’s
basic needs, such as medical care and household essentials. To supplement this,
Tracy’s mother sometimes digs in other people’s gardens for a small wage, which she
uses to contribute toward Tracy’s school fees. However, the combined efforts of both
parents are still not enough to consistently cover the cost of education.
As a result, Tracy often misses school due to unpaid fees, which disrupts her learning
and puts her academic progress at risk. Despite these challenges, she remains
determined to continue her education and support her family in the future.
