One of C2U's requests when we partnered with the Lutheran Church of Uganda to build a primary school in Bubago was that it include a library - a place where kids could read for pleasure. We knew it would improve their English and expand their vocabularies! Since the building was completed, C2U has taken hundreds of books donated by friends and stocked the library. The craft group of the Far Away Friends program in Bubago have been selling items in the market in Jinja for over a year now. They receive a commission for all their items that are sold. Currently, they have baskets, star ornaments, paper bead earrings and bracelets, and the beautiful paper bead crosses you can see in the upper left-hand corner of the third photo. We are so proud of the crafting and business skills these women have obtained through the FAF program!

It's an exciting time for the women in Bubago! Their newly-constructed hatchery is now officially open. Fertilized eggs have been added to the incubator and new chicks should arrive in three weeks. Watch for the big announcement when they hatch!!

We're asked that a lot by people who admire the baskets the women in the Far Away Friends program in Bubago and Orem have been making. Here's the answer - locally-sourced dyes are used and the strips of papyrus and other natural fibers are cooked in the dye to set the colors. The result is a wide variety of vibrant shades for baskets and wall-hangings!
