Chelsey shares some thoughts about her first trip to Uganda:
Since this was my first time in Uganda, I was told stories, I was shown pictures and everyone had advice to give. While all of the information I was provided was beyond helpful, I wanted to make this trip my own. We arrived in Africa and the butterflies immediately set in. It was unlike anything I had ever imagined. We were greeted by the most friendly people, who made me feel like we had known each other our whole lives and from there I knew we would be in the best hands.
It was then time to head to the first village, Bubago. As we were driving, I noticed that the people on the streets were hard at work and each person we passed, stopped what they were doing and looked at us. We gave a little wave and the smiles and joy radiated from their faces! Something so small meant so much to me!
When we arrived in the village, we were greeted with songs, cheers and more smiles! Leaving Bubago after three days was beyond tough. The people you meet, the stories you hear and the relationships you build are unlike anything I thought was possible.
On the fourth day, we headed to the village of Orem. While our journey there was quite memorable, we were again greeted by smiles, songs, and cheers!
Orem will always hold a special place in my heart because before the trip my husband, Brandon, and I decided to sponsor a student through the Need-Based Scholarship program. We chose to sponsor this adorable student, Allan. Brandon and I had the privilege of meeting Allan and that moment will forever be ingrained in my mind! He was timid and hesitant but after a few minutes, he showed his incredible smile and we knew this was the start to a beautiful friendship!
I will forever be grateful and blessed to say I had the honor of meeting the remarkable people of Bubago and Orem.
