Emmanuel is the only surviving child in a family of two. Both he and his younger brother were born with HIV/AIDS. While Emmanuel has fought bravely to survive, his brother passed away. His father died five years ago from HIV, and his mother, also living with the illness, left home, leaving Emmanuel without parental care.

Today, Emmanuel lives with his grandmother, who has become his sole source of love and stability. Despite her frailty, she ensures he takes his antiretroviral (ARV) medication daily. Each month, she walks with him for 30 minutes to the Health Centre in Bar Sub County to pick up his medication. Her determination is simple yet profound: she wants Emmanuel to live, grow, and one day become a man.

Yet the grandmother’s strength has limits. She is too weak to work meaningfully, and without income, she cannot afford Emmanuel’s school fees. Emmanuel’s future is at risk not because of his illness but because poverty threatens to rob him of the education that could empower him to rise above his circumstances.
