Favor is the fourth-born in a family of five children who live together with both parents. She would like to be a teacher someday! The mother is a hardworking peasant farmer, cultivating vegetables to feed the family and selling the surplus to cover school fees and other basic needs. Her dedication
reflects a strong desire to see her children attain education and break the cycle of
poverty.
The father, however, does not contribute meaningfully to the household. Instead, he
is often idle and has developed a habit of stealing the little money earned from
vegetable sales to spend on alcohol. This behavior undermines the mother’s efforts
and places the children’s education at risk, as the family’s limited resources are
diverted away from essential needs.
Favor’s situation highlights the resilience of her mother’s commitment and the
vulnerability caused by her father’s neglect. Despite these challenges, Favor has
shown promise in school, but her continued education is uncertain without external
support. For this reason, the Lutheran Church of Uganda has recommended Favor for
inclusion in the NBS program, ensuring that her mother’s sacrifices are reinforced and
Favor’s future is safeguarded.
