Ferdinand is the firstborn and currently the only child in his family, though his mother
is seven months pregnant and due in July. Both of his parents are illiterate and make
a living by digging for others, while his father occasionally takes on jobs such as
brickmaking and masonry to earn income. Despite these hardships, Ferdinand’s
father is deeply committed to ensuring his son receives an education and a better
future than his own.

Earlier this year, Ferdinand’s father sold bricks to Orem Lutheran Nursery and
Primary School (OLNPS). Instead of requesting cash payment, he asked the school
to hold the funds so Ferdinand would not be sent home for unpaid fees. He now
works among the builders at OLNPS, taking only 10% of his daily earnings and
leaving 90% at the school to cover Ferdinand’s education costs.

The Lutheran Church of Uganda and OLNPS recognize his father’s extraordinary
sacrifice and determination. However, they also acknowledge the limitations of his
situation—without a permanent or well-paying job, Ferdinand’s schooling cannot
always be sustained. For this reason, Ferdinand has been recommended for
admission to the NBS program through Connect to Uganda, ensuring that his father’s
efforts are supported and Ferdinand’s education is secured.
