Michelle is her parents' only child. She was conceived when her mother was 17 and still in school, an early pregnancy. The father denied responsibility for the pregnancy, leaving Michelle’s maternal grandparents to provide care and support. Despite her mother’s initial desire to terminate the pregnancy, the grandparents intervened to protect the child’s life.
Following Michelle’s birth, her mother abandoned the family and has not been seen
since. Michelle has since been raised solely by her grandparents, who themselves
are elderly peasant farmers with declining physical strength. They are illiterate and
lack professional skills or a stable income. Their subsistence farming yields only a
minimal amount of food and cannot meet Michelle’s educational needs. The absence
of both parents has left Michelle vulnerable to neglect, poverty, and psychosocial
distress.
